“Information technology” may be the buzz word against which all others are measured. Officially defined as the gathering, processing, accumulation and dissemination of numerical, textual, pictorial and vocal information by a system of telecommunications and computers, the laymen’s concept of what the basic principles of IT is are generally far from the truth. In fact, the field of IT has grown so large and encompasses so many different areas that it is difficult to conceive of its reach.
While the uninitiated may believe that IT simply means all that computer ‘stuff,’ the truth is this field of internet technology is varied and includes everything from designing networks for large business concerns to developing new computer hardware and everything in between. IT even takes things a step further and has evolved to include other technologies like televisions, cellphones and even cars. This rapid development has made the IT field one of the fastest growing careers currently available.
Perhaps the most all inclusive definitions of information technology is simply the following: IT is any process, technology or program that renders information and data into a visualized format utilizing any form of multi-media distribution. That definition sounds inclusive because IT is all inclusive.
Information technology is so far reaching that entire fields have sprung up, devoted to integrating, computers, technology and, of course, IT into almost every field imaginable. Medical IT, library science, even educational institutions have jumped aboard the IT bandwagon. It is now possible to get degrees and certifications in these and other specialized fields.
Perhaps that is what gives power to the words information technology, why it is the buzz word of the century. IT has become a part of everyday life. Cars now have the ability to direct us to the nearest Chi Tea Room and children’s toys can be customized via a cable. Information technology is more than a buzz word – it’s almost a bible.
